I was recently invited to check out Tossed, a salad and sandwich shop in the Prudential Center in Boston. I’m a big fan of places that make those monster-sized salads with a whole slew of ingredients to toss in. Places like Cosi and other salad stars like it seem to be taking over food courts by storm. So the other night my friend Carrie joined me for dinner to catch up over some sizeable salads.
The Tossed in Boston is near the Ann Taylor Loft in the Pru. It was pretty empty when we went, and it’s unfortunate that it’s away from the main stream of traffic of the shops, and separate from the food court. But it was very bright and clean, and the employees were friendly.
Carrie opted for the Apple Walnut Salad with Chicken, which is a selection from the menu. I had checked out the menu a few days prior and was very pleased with the huge selection of veggies and toppings to add in, so I wanted to create my own. I started with a mixed green base, and added in broccoli, portobella mushrooms, sugar snap peas, caramelized onions, banana peppers, sun dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and chickpeas. I also asked for avocado and was granted with nearly half of one. Holy guacamole! It was actually a bit much (a serving size is ¼ of an avocado) but usually places skimp. Instead of going for one of the pre-made dressings, I asked for a light drizzle of olive oil and some balsamic vinegar.
I was really impressed with how fresh and clean everything was. Usually some of these salad stations have wilted ingredients, or the basic peas, corn, water chestnut, baby corn, pale tomato options. Tossed had those (but not wilted) and so many more, so the salad-building possibilities are endless.
One thing I love about the Tossed website is that you can build your own salad online and check out the nutrition information as you go. It can be quite shocking to see how much fat or salt something like croutons or wasabi peas adds on! I wish they had a kiosk (kind of like Au Bon Pain) that would allow you to see this in store, since I know most people aren’t as OCD as me when it comes to examining the menu well before I visit a restaurant. Some of the salads (ones you create yourself as well as pre-created ones) can be total calorie bombs, so people shouldn’t be duped into thinking they’re getting a nice healthy meal that could really be some leafy greens under a whole lotta crispy, salty, fried calories and fat. If you’re adding fat from nuts or olive oil it’s one thing, but crispy wontons, ranch dressing, plantain chips, cheese and bacon can make your salad go from healthy to harmful very fast.
Tossed also makes sandwiches, wraps, crepes, soups and has a gluten free menu.
