I arrived today in the little city of Williamson, WV. It’s a region full of awesome geologic road cuts, very friendly strangers, and inspiring sustainable development projects. The city downtown also has some of the most massive flood walls I’ve ever seen; I’d recommend you drive the 14 hours from Boston just to see them, although I’m planning on eventually focusing more on the successful economic and community development projects focusing on local food and renewable energy. These changes were not accomplished by activists shutting down coal mines for a day, but by a few bright individuals facilitating the community living up to its potential.
